Meet Saffie…

Nov 15, 2021

* This post is written by our previous Equipment Case Manager. *

Hello! My name is Saffie, and I recently started working for Access Your Life as their first ever Case Manager, making me responsible for the management and communications of their Equipment Request Form. So, anyone looking to source a suitable wheelchair, for example, will chat to me about how AYL can help, to request advice from other team members, and be put in touch with relevant suppliers. I am also assisting Lauren P with her new Grant Assistance Scheme, which is extremely rewarding and allows us to help people access vital funding to pay for requested equipment.

Employment has not always been easy for me to find and maintain, as I have ADHD. I’ve found a lot of employers don’t understand what it’s like to live with a disability, meaning they can’t provide the necessary support to ensure I am working to my full potential. Last year I eventually found a job that I really loved, but it soon became clear that the company didn’t have any interest in learning about my condition. This resulted in them shouting at me for small things, without taking the time to teach me in a way that was easier for me to understand. This quickly caused me to have a breakdown and eventually quit my job, both of which made me determined to find a more inclusive workplace.

I’ve actually struggled with my mental health since the age of 12 but found as a child I received a lot of help and was always checked upon. Yet since becoming an adult I’ve noticed a significant drop in available services, making it hard for me to get used to no longer having the same level of help I received for many years. Thankfully, Access Your Life has been really helpful and have already supported me in many ways, allowing me to work to the best of my ability and minimise the risk of my job triggering my mental health struggles. When I’m not working, I enjoy horse riding, walking my dogs, and adventuring! Three things that really help me to focus and clear my mind.

Thanks For Reading – Saffie (Saffron)
