At Steering Developments we’re proud to have been delivering life-enhancing products and vehicles for over 4 decades, half of which we have also been a UK manufacturer of powered wheels. Our SD Motion range began in 1999 after a successful visit to Japan, where we brought home the power add-on systems to enable the UK market to transform their manual wheelchairs into power chairs. Now, 24 years later, we've seen the SD Motion range being used all over the world, as well as appearing on our much-loved TV soaps and at the Paralympics.
Together the SD Motion Drive (a joystick power system) and the SD Motion Assist (power assistance in the hand rims) give users the option to add power to their manual wheelchair both in and out of their homes. We have also partnered with Mountain Trike to allow our wheelchair users the experience of riding off-road with the SD Motion Trike (a Mountain Trike wheelchair base upgraded with our SD Motion joystick system). Together with our customers, we believe that we have the best multi-terrain trike on the market.
The SD Motion Drive converts a manual wheelchair into a powered version, using joystick controls and an add-on power pack. The lightweight, compact design means it can be fitted onto a wide range of manual chairs. It's also easy to operate with 5-speed levels and individually adjustable driving modes. There is an optional attendant controller, providing carers or loved ones with complete control of the wheelchair if required. Both the user and attendant can even switch between powered and manual mode with ease. Its long-distance range (around 18 miles with a Li-Ion battery) also provides users with a flexible solution that enables maximum independence.

The SD Motion Assist converts a manual wheelchair into a powered version, using an add-on electric propulsion system that is programmed to suit the user's individual strength. It has two speeds and can be fitted onto folding or fixed frame wheelchairs with 24″ wheels. The powerful motors increase the forward motion to three times the power whenever the user pushes on the wheels, helping maintain upper body mobility. Its long-distance range (up to 30km with the optional Li-Ion battery) also enables users to travel longer distances and traverse inclines with ease.
The SD Motion Trike is a fully powered, joystick controlled, off road wheelchair. The quick release wheels and folding trike base make it easy to transport. It's also easy to operate with 5-speed levels and built-in braking function. The stable base, front wheel drive, deep treads, and 3 Rock Shox shock absorbers enable users to comfortably navigate demanding terrains. The frame is available in 200 colours, with various options (such as a higher or lower backrest), and additional accessories (such as an optional headrest, storage rack, and push bar). At Steering Developments, we get amazing feedback from our SD Motion customers. As well as our high-quality systems, our customers are reassured by the great service delivered by our experienced team.
Our company policy is to always carry out a thorough demonstration prior to taking an order to ensure every customer is getting the right product based on their individual requirements. We also always hold a large amount of stock so that our customers can have parts delivered the next working day. It's for these reasons our customers come back to us time and again. In fact, we have some customers who have been coming back to us for over 30 years, so we look forward to welcoming new users from the AYL community!
