The Blind Soapmaker

Aug 20, 2021

* This post is written by a guest blogger - it is not sponsored. *

Access Your Life is known for encouraging and enabling people with disabilities to achieve a brighter future, whether they require physical or mental support. It’s for these reasons that I'm excited to work alongside AYL to support more people in learning how to participate in workshops via the Blind Soapmaker!

Alexandra Negoita is a young woman wearing dark glasses and an apron. She is pouring soap into pink soap moulds.

Established in 2015, the Blind Soapmaker is dedicated to making luxury bath products such as soaps, bath bombs, hand creams and body gels. Every product is designed and created by hand in Durham, using only the very best ingredients and fragrances, along with a level of passion, empathy and quality control that is unique to the brand. This is because I am blind - but instead of letting my vision impairment hinder my abilities, I’ve been able to contribute to business and society.

“Blind people are very aware of the scent and feel of a product, so my products are made to smell and feel great - not just in the minute you take them out of their wrapper but throughout the time in which you use them.”

During the lockdown, life would have been boring if it weren’t for my business. My blindness means that I can never work alone, but it doesn’t mean that I must give up my sense of independence, creativity, and passions. By creating my bath products, I feel that I have accessed my own life. I have value, a presence in society, and I am making a difference in other people’s lives. Particularly those living with vision impairments, as it demonstrates how a disability does not define you. More importantly, it doesn't stop you from living an independent, fulfilled life.

Not only is soap an essential household item, once the Coronavirus outbreak swept the globe, it suddenly became difficult to get supplies. So why not have some fun and make your own bespoke soaps? I have an easy to follow home creation kit, which you can learn more about by clicking the links below. Pricing starts from £11.99, but I have given the AYL community a special promo code to use on all Blind Soapmaker products! Please tag me in your pictures when making your own soaps, as I love to hear back from customers. Also feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about my business, soap products, or classes!
