Disabled & Looking For Work?

Sep 25, 2020

Evenbreak was created to solve a couple of big problems relating to employment and disabilities. Something that is even more poignant in this new post-covid economic climate, as it’s incredibly difficult for anyone to get a job. But if you have a disability, it’s even harder as you are twice as likely to be unemployed! Depressing, isn’t it? The good news is that there are many employers out there who are enlightened enough to understand that there are many business advantages to be gained by employing people with disabilities. For example:

1 - We are just as productive as people without disabilities.
2 - We have less time off sick.
3 - We have fewer workplace accidents.
4 - We stay in our jobs longer.
5 - We have additional skills developed as a result of living in a world not designed for us, such as tenacity, innovation, determination and creativity.
6 - We have insider experience with the “disability market”.

Plus the ‘new’ ways of working involve flexibility, innovation, remote working, and doing things differently. Something people with disabilities have been doing forever, and so are ideally suited to the workplaces of the future. However, even when a business understands the benefits of employing people of all abilities, they still find it difficult to attract disabled applicants. Whereas disabled job seekers struggle to find employers willing to look beyond their diagnosis at the skills they have to offer. This is why I founded Evenbreak in 2011 – a specialist job board specifically designed at helping these groups of people find one another.

Evenbreak is a not-for-profit social enterprise run by and for disabled people. Not only is it completely free for job seekers to access, but you can be confident in knowing that employers paying to advertise vacancies on our accessible job board are far more likely to be receptive and understanding towards your individual needs. We offer advice and support to both candidates and employees, ensuring everyone is provided with the tools to succeed. Participating employers are as diverse as Channel 4, E.ON, John Lewis, HS2, Amazon and many, many more!
