In 1999, after a successful visit to Japan, we brought home the power add on systems, enabling the UK market to transform their manual wheelchairs into power chairs.
Now, 24 years later, we’ve seen the SD Motion range being used all over the world, as well as appearing on our much loved tv soaps and at the Paralympics.
With the joystick power system (the SD Motion Drive) or power assistance at the hand rims (the SD Motion Assist) we give users the option to add power to their manual wheelchair both in and out of their homes.
This year we are excited to have partnered up with Mountain Trike to allow our wheelchair users the experience of riding off-road with the SD Motion Trike.
The SD Motion Trike is the complete package, offering the ultra reliable Mountain Trike base wheelchair upgraded with our SD Motion joystick system.

The SD Motion Drive converts your manual wheelchair into a joystick controlled electric powered version, with our add on power-pack. It’s easy to operate with 5 speed levels and individually adjustable driving modes to put you in total control. There is also an optional attendant controller, to allow an attendant complete control of your wheelchair. With its lightweight, compact design which can be fitted to a wide range of manual chairs, its transportability (even for holidays) plus the long distance range of around 18 miles with the Li-ion battery, the SD Motion Drive offers you a practical and flexible solution for maximum independence. The user can instantly change the battery and even switch from powered into manual mode if required.
The SD Motion Assist is programmed to suit your individual strength. This system has two speeds and is perfect for providing a little extra strength without the need to transfer to a fully-powered wheelchair. Adding powered wheels to your wheelchair helps you travel longer distances and traverse slopes and ramps with ease. Powerful motors increase the forward motion from you pushing on the wheels to four times the power, allowing you to maintain your upper body mobility while providing an extra boost as you move.
The SD Motion Trike multi-terrain wheelchair is tough and powerful and ready to go wherever you are. With front-wheel drive, deep treads and a stable base, more demanding terrain is no longer a barrier. The 3 Rock Shox shock absorbers offer the smoothest ride possible over bumps and are adjustable based on the weight of the wheelchair user. The SD Motion Trike is available in a range of 200 frame colours, with higher or lower backrest and optional headrest for extra seating support, comfort and stability. The footrest platform can be raised and there is the option of a luggage carrier for transporting bags or a picnic basket. Wheels are quick release and the SD Motion Trike can be folded up in less than 2 minutes for transportation.
Our standard SD Motion Trike comes with everything you need to go new places as we have included so many extras we feel should be fitted as standard to any outdoor explorer chair. eg Tannus insert, Stan slime puncture proofing, kevlar lining etc.
