RGK FrontWheel – Wheelchair Attachment

USERS RATING:
(Based on the users needs, lifestyle and preferences.)

Item Description:
A chunky wheel that clips onto the front of your manual wheelchair to allow it to go over uneven/rough ground. It can be lifted to allow normal wheeling with all four main wheels on the ground or clicked down into place which in turn lifts the front castor wheels. It’s similar to the FreeWheel, only shorter and wider.

Source of Item:
RGK – I got it free when I ordered my RGK Tiga FX which was a great deal!

Diagnosis:
Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)

Personal Opinion:
I have tried both the FreeWheel and this FrontWheel. Whilst the FrontWheel is less portable, it cannot be clipped on the back of the chair when not in use, and is not foldable, which makes it quite cumbersome. it does however fit very well onto chairs with the fitting points attached, making it feels much more like an extension of the chair rather than a flimsy clip-on.

I also like the fact that it sticks out much less than the FreeWheel, allowing it to be used both indoors and outdoors without being removed. It makes surfaces like cobbles, stones, and grass a lot easier to wheel over. But should you come across a smooth surface or want to go inside, you can simply lift the wheel and lock it in place so that it’s still attached for future use, but your castors are on the ground.

I love that it feels very stable when in use and isn’t bouncy like the FreeWheel can be. I also found it much easier to roll in a straight line, as the FreeWheel had a tendency to veer off to one side, especially on cambered paths. It can be a little fiddly to attach or remove, but this becomes easier the more you use it.
